How to write a conclusion paragraph for an essay

Essays were generally the expression of the author’s argument regarding a particular topic or issue. Once all the references were presented to prove the argument, the essay needs to have a binding agent to solidify its argument and relate the presented topic to its audience. Thus, a conclusion paragraph is needed to close the piece and resonate its purpose.

A conclusion paragraph is the summary of the main points to leave the readers a clear sense of what the audience will take away from the essay. To write a conclusion paragraph effectively, you should consider the following guide to achieve a good essay closure:

Choose smooth transition words

Your conclusion paragraph should transcend from the body smoothly. The first sentence of the paragraph should have clear transition words to signal your readers that you are beginning to wrap up your essay. Different transition words might have different effects on certain structure so be sure to use words or phrases as clear as possible to not create a confusion among the readers. Some words used are “to conclude”, “to summarize”, etc. With practice, you can use other transition words to make the opening of the conclusion paragraph more appealing and effective.

Restate your main points/argument

Once you already signaled the reader that you are going to end the essay, you can restate your main points to provide the reader something to take from your piece. This can be done by summarizing each main point without redundancy. Simply present the important points as a reminder to your readers about the overall sense of the essay. If you are writing an argumentative essay, you can restate your arguments to leave the readers with one final appeal.

A call to action

A call to action can also be included in your conclusion paragraph if you want the readers to be persuaded or be inspired to do something in reference to the points you presented in your essay. You should use concise words to convey the meaning clearly to serve its purpose. This works well in an informative and argumentative essays.

Summing it up, the conclusion paragraph should transition smoothly from the main body followed by clear and simple summary of the points. If needed, finish it with a call of action to readers. No new information should be presented in the conclusion, but rather a realization.
